Ok people a couple of things here. I’d like to thank the Eagles and Bills for making that trade because the draft I had out before was pretty weak. Now, yes, I am fully aware that everyone and their mother has Sanchez going number four but I just have no faith in him whatsoever and I am going to assume that the people that get paid for this are at least as intelligent as I am. Also this is predicated on the idea that there are no trades, obviously this isn’t even close to what will happen. I would expect at least two pick for pick trades (someone will probably trade up to the top 11 to draft Sanchez) and there are a handful of veterans that may also be traded (Ocho Cinco and Boldin heading the class).

1) Detroit Lions- Matt Stafford – Jr – QB – Georgia - The Lions are in need of a major overhaul in almost every facet of their organization, as indicated by them being the first team to play 16 games and lose every single one of them. They select Stafford because he has all of the tangible skills that you want out of a franchise quarterback, there is an abundance of depth along the offensive line, and there is no true number one pick in this draft. Stafford may not have blown Scouts away at the combine but he didn’t do anything to give them any extra concerns. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two,

2) St. Louis Rams- Jason Smith – Sr – LT – Baylor - Since the Rams let go of Orlando Pace they have pretty well penciled in the fact that they will be getting a tackle at number two. The only question is which one? Andre Smith may have been the most dominant, while Eugene Monroe may be the most dependable, Michael Oher is also very good and then there is Jason Smith who has shot up draft boards from out of no where, well Waco to be a little bit more specific. The Rams take Smith because he is generally regarded as the tackle with the most upside. He has great feet since he used to be a tight end and has been the best kept secret in the Big XII. He did help to lead an offensive revival leading the way for Robert Griffin, one of the most dynamic dual threat quarterbacks in the nation. Scouting Report. Video: One

3) Kansas City Chiefs - Michael Crabtree – Soph – WR – Texas Tech - With the offensive line giving up 55 sacks last year this may not be the greatest need of the Chiefs but the team needs something that they can hang their hat on. With Dwayne Bowe proving that he can be a good NFL wide receiver, the addition of Matt Cassel and assuming that they can hang on to Tony Gonzalez and that he continues to produce at the same level that he has for his entire career the Chiefs could have an elite passing offense. With Brandon Albert developing as a young left tackle the Chiefs just need to hope that they can find enough time for Cassel to get the ball off and enough of a running game to keep the defense honest. For the Chiefs to succeed any time soon they need Albert to be a true left tackle and drafting a right tackle at number three is an extreme reach. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

4) Seattle Seahawks – Aaron Curry – Sr – LB – Wake Forest – There are plenty of options here for the Seahawks; they could go with Sanchez, Smith, Monroe, Raji or a number of others but the single most sure fire prospect in this draft seems to be Curry. Curry is an absolute animal with physical talent out the wazoo. He can step in and immediately help a team that ranked 30th in total defense. This will give them a solid core at linebacker consisting of Lofa Tatupa and Lerroy Hill. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

5) Cleveland Browns – Brian Orakpo – Sr – DE/ OLB – Texas - The Browns got a total of 5 sacks last year out of their starting OLBs. In a 3-4 defense that is simply unacceptable, especially when you consider the fact that Shaun Rogers had 4.5 sacks as a nose tackle. Orakpo is a physical freak who will instantly upgrade the pass rush for Eric Mangini who will demand a lot more from his defense this coming year. Mangini will get that if Orakpo is anywhere near as good in the pros as he was in college where he had 11 sacks in 11 games. Hmmm if we project that out… Scouting Report.
6) Cincinnati Bengals – Eugene Monroe – Sr – LT – Virgina – Monroe is the most sure fire tackle in this draft, coming out of Al Groh’s system in Virginia. The Bengals will hope that he can step in and have as much success as D’Brickashaw Ferguson has had in New York after being drafted number four in the 2006 draft. The Bengals are coming very close to returning to true Bungal form. Their team is obviously dependant on Carson Palmer to have any type of success and if he has now become injury prone they must protect him at all cost. The off the field issues of Andre Smith throw up an even larger red flag for those residing in Paul Brown Stadium. Scouting Report. Video: One,

7) Oakland Raiders – Jeremy Maclin – Soph – WR – Missouri - It’s hard to decide which cliche to throw out here about Al Davis and speed so I’ll let you choose for yourself. Either way Jamarcus Russell is in serious need of a playmaker on the outside because Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schillins are just not what you are supposed to surround the number one overall selection with for the firsts two years of his career. If the Raiders don’t do something to help him this year there may be a murmuring of him being a bust and that would only further deteriorate a very poor situation in Oakland. Scouting Report. Video: One

8 ) Jacksonville Jaguars - B.J. Raji – Sr – DT – Boston College - Raji was one of the hottest commodities coming out of the Senior Bowl. He has the ability to both stop the rush and rush the passer and could be an anchor for a defense. Raji took a major hit to his draft stock recently with a possible positive drug test. Everyone and their dog is denying that they have heard anything about it but the more Raji has to defend himself against it, fair or not, the more his stock drops. The Jaguars are hoping that with the addition of Raji their defense can become what it used to be when they paired Marcus Stroud with John Henderson taking both of them with relatively early first round picks. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

9) Green Bay Packers – Aaron Maybin – Soph – DE – Penn State – The number one knock on Maybin is his lack of size. He comes in at 6′4 and 246 pounds, which is undersized for his traditional defensive end position but would be ideal to play outside linebacker in the Packers new 3-4 scheme. The Packers have talent on their defense but they need to be able to pressure the passer from the edge and there is no certainty that Aaron Kampman will make a seamless switch and Brady Poppinga has a total of three sacks over his four-year career. Scouting Report. Video: One

10) San Francisco 49ers – Malcolm Jenkins – Sr – CB – Ohio State – He was almost a lock for a top 5 spot until he ran a 4.55 sec 40 and for some reason scouts and GMs think that the way you run a straight line on a track without pads on is a great way to determine how you will be as a pro football player. Ri-fucking-diculous. Personally I still like Jenkins a lot. Just watch the video his play speaks for itself. Scouting Report. Video: One

11) Buffalo Bills – Michael Oher – Sr – LT – Ole Miss – With the trade of Peters the Bills now have a few more options but they also have an even more glaring need. They must have a left tackle with this pick. Oher slides a little bit because of the comparison between him and the other top tackles but Oher is a very good tackle and should be able to hold down the left side of the line. Scouting Report. Video: One

12) Denver Broncos – Clay Mathews – Sr – LB – Switching into a 3-4 defense the Broncos need some help rushing the passer. With Jarvis Moss and Elvis Dumervil as the supposed starters at the moment Mathews would be a big upgrade. Mathews also has a ton of upside but may also be a candidate for bust of the year because he has so little experience as a starter. Scouting Report. Video: One,

13) Washington Redskins - Andre Smith – Jr – LT – Alabama - Smith is arguably the most talented and dominating offensive lineman in this draft. However, off the field issues and a possible weight problem in addition to the worst combine “performance” of anyone in recent history hurt his draft status. He then followed this up with his, now all important, pro day and came up short again. He should just be thanking the football gods that someone figured out how to film games because his film is the only thing going for him. I could have seen him going number one overall before the Sugar Bowl but now he will be blocking for Portis. He may start out as a guard but will obviously be transition to tackle as the aging Jon Janson and Chris Samuels are moved out. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

14) New Orleans Saints – Vonta Davis – Sr – CB – Illinois - I don’t have Davis rated as the best defensive back but I think he may have more upside than Jenkins. With that said the Saints might reach for anyone in the secondary. The Saints continued their struggles against the passing game in ‘08 when they finished 23rd against the pass, giving up an average of 221 yards per game. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

15) Houston Texans – Brain Cushing – Sr – LB – USC - I’m not in love with this pick but with Mathews off the board and the Texans not being as crazy as I would like them to, they still look at the OLB position. Cushing is a more surefire prospect than Mathews but he might not have the same upside. All and all this is probably a better pick for the Texans since Cushing seems to be a more complete package rather than just a player who’s stock is skyrocketing. Scouting Report. Video: One

16) San Diego Chargers – Rey Maualuga – Sr – ILB – USC - The Chargers ranked 11th in rush defense last season despite the fact that their starting ILB, Tim Dobbins, only posted 58 tackles while starting all 16 games. Maualuga is a tackling machine who may double that number from Dobbins, ok probably not but he will be a big step forward for a team that will also be getting Shawn Merriman back from injury. Some people may be tempted to take Moreno or Wells here but I believe that is too much money to have tied up in one position with $18 million due to Tomlinson over the next three years and the franchising of Sproles. According to Todd McShay Maualuga is “…like fishing with dynamite. When you draft Rey Maualuga your going to throw the dynamite in its going to explode there is going to be fish everywhere but you better have guys around him to clean up the mess.” San Diego may have enough talent around him to allow Maualuga to be the dominant force that he could be. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

17) New York Jets – Mark Sanchez – Jr – QB – USC - This is an interesting spot for the Jets; they clearly need a quarterback with the loss of Brett Favre but I am not particularly sold on the ability of Sanchez to come in and be in impact contributor in his first and maybe even his second year in the league. He certainly has the skills but his sheer lack of experience is worrisome. If all you watched of him was the Rose Bowl you would think this guy was unstoppable (Hmmm Sir Vincent Young anybody?) but as a whole he certainly has some chinks in his armor. One of the major concerns is how good did he look simply because he was at USC (just to note the Jets gave up 53 sacks last year). Matt Leinhart is not doing him any favors here. Nor is Reggie Bush. The two most hyped players coming out of USC have both fallen short of expectations; of course this is much more true for Matt “I’m a bench warmer” Leinhart. Scouting Report. Video: One

18 ) Denver Broncos – Tyson Jackson – Sr – DE – LSU – One of the more over-hyped players in the nation the last year or two but has all of the tangible skills that you would want for a 3-4 defensive end. The Broncos continue to make the switch from a bad 4-3 defense into a 3-4 defense. This is a monumental switch for any team, but for a team like Denver they could spend all of their picks in this draft on defense and still need more help next year. Scouting Report. Video: One

19) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Darius Heyward-Bey – Jr – WR – Maryland- T He may be one of the bigger boom/bust prospects in this draft. He ran a 4.30 forty at 6′1 and 210 lbs. and has been rumored as high as number seven to Oakland but I think that is mostly lazy prognostication because of the whole “Al Davis loves speed” motif. Scouting Report.Video: One

20) Detroit Lions – James Laurenitus – Sr – ILB – Ohio State- Just look at the tape on this guy. He could have been a top ten draft choice had he come out last year but opted to stay for his final year of college at Ohio State. Now the Lions select him with their 2nd selection in the first round and cement their line-backing core. With former first round pick Ernie Simms and recent addition Julian Peterson it gives the Lions one unit on their team that they can hang their hat on. It may seem odd that they haven’t addressed their offensive line at all but they have so much money tied up in their line as it is, it may make it hard for them to select someone there in the first round. Scouting Report. Video: One

21)Philadelphia Eagles – Knowshon Moreno – Soph – RB – Georgia - I think Moreno is the best back in this draft once you consider health. In addition to him being the best over all back he is also a much much better receiver out of the backfield than Wells, who is the only other top tier running back. Moreno had almost 400 yards receiving in a much more traditional offense than what they run in Philadelphia. Moreno is the total package despite a pathetic 40 time (4.61). Somehow despite the fact that apparently he is “slow” Moreno rushed for 1,400 yards last season. Maybe everyone in the SEC is slow too. Scouting Report.
22) Minnesota Vikings – Alex Mack – Sr – C – Cal – Mack is rated by many as one of the top offensive linemen in the entire draft and by almost everyone as the number one center. The loss of Matt Birk is a monumental void in the middle of the Minnesota line, which they count heavily upon in order to run A.P. all day. They are in desperate need to fill some very large shoes and Mack is as qualified as anyone available but even he may not be able to immediately make up for the loss of Birk. Scouting Report. Video: One

23) New England - Clint Sintim – Sr – LB – UVA – He can come in and fill the void that Mike Vrabel has left while making the line backing core younger and more athletic for the second year in a row and most importantly he has led the nation in sacks for a linebacker over the last two years. This gives them a replacement for Pierre Woods who totaled 35 tackles and only one sack all of last year. In addition to Sintim they already have Adaleous Thomas, which would give them the best pass rush they have had in years. Scouting Report. Video: One

24) Atlanta Falcons- Alphonso Smith – Sr – CB – Wake Forest - Smith led the nation in interceptions at eight and set the all time ACC record for interceptions. The entire Falcon’s team had 10 interceptions last year and were ranked 21st in pass defense. Smith will be able to come to a young up and coming team and have an immediate impact. He can also help out on special teams. Scouting Report.
25) Miami Dolphins – Duke Robinson – Sr – G – Oklahoma – The Duke is one of the two best interior linemen in the entire draft and is a great pick here as the Dolphins solidify the left side of their line and vault themselves into the conversation for the best left side of the line in another year or two. Parcells has always believed in building along the line and things went so well for them with that last year they may continue down that same line. Other options include a wide receiver (either Percy Harvin or Hakim Nicks) or a project at quarterback like Josh Freeman on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively they could be looking at Perria Jerry to play the five technique in their 3-4 defense. Scouting Report.
26) Baltimore Ravens- Max Unger – Sr – OL – Oregon – The Baltimore Ravens define themselves by their defense and their running game. Unger will be able to help them continue the tradition of having an elite running game and can play a variety of positions along the line. The Ravens would love to select a shut down corner here but D.J. Moore is the only option and I think he would be a bit of a stretch here. Unger is the most versatile lineman in the entire draft. He has played four positions on the line in his time at Oregon. Started out as a left tackle and then was moved inside to center. Would probably play guard for the Ravens. Scouting Report. Wells is one of the more interesting prospects in this draft class. He averaged 5.9 and 5.8 yards per carry in the last two years respectively. With that said he has had injury issues plaguing him throughout his career. Last year despite missing several games he still rushed for over 1,100 yards and was a driving force for the Ohio State offense. Scouting Report. Video: One

28 ) Buffalo Bills- Everette Brown – Sr – DE – Florida State - Brown is coming off of an extremely productive season where he totaled 21.5 TFLs and 13.5 sacks. Personally I like him more as a 4-3 defensive end but many scouts are projecting him as a 3-4 edge pass rusher. The Bill’s starters are weighing in at 261 and 243 for Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel respectively so you know they aren’t afraid of having someone that’s smaller. They ranked 28th last year in terms of sacks and need an upgrade in terms of pressure and Brown may be just the person to do that. In this draft Brown fell unbelievably far. Scouting Report. Video: One

29) New York Giants – William Moore – Sr – S – Missouri - Look the Giants have Super Bowl aspirations and C.C. Brown is their starting strong safety. Enough said. Brown signed a one year deal so they can work Moore in slowly but he will be the future in New York. Weighing in around 225 Moore can deliver a de-cleater of epic proportions but still has good speed and can be an absolute ball hawk with eight interceptions his junior year. They really need to have another receiver but I’m not high enough on Kenny Britt or Hakeem Nicks to take them at 29 but they remain a strong consideration here. Scouting Report.
30) Tennessee Titans – Brandon Pettigrew – Sr – TE – Oklahoma State - Pettigrew is undoubtedly the top tight end coming out in this years draft and will be a safety valve for Kerry Collins (not Vince Young). Pettigrew is a very good blocker and can be put on whichever edge the elite pass rusher is coming from to help the Titans in their protection and has very solid hands despite not putting up massive numbers. They could address cornerback here but I think Pettigrew is a better value than anyone else left on the board. Scouting Report.
31) Arizona Cardinals- Perria Jerry – Sr – DT – Ole Miss - Jerry is a legit DT that can cause havoc in the backfield. The Cardinal defense overachieved in the playoffs and is still in need of some help. Jerry can’t stop the run like Raji but that is why he slips back to 31. He can, however, get to the passer and create pressure up in his face which is something the Cardinals did not have much of last year. LeSean McCoy is another interesting pick here but there should still be value at running back in the second round. Also if they do end up trading Boldin then Hakim Nicks and maybe Percy Harvin would become a pretty good fit here. Scouting Report. Video: One

32) Pittsburg Steelers – Percy Harvin – Jr – WR - Florida - Harvin is not a prototypical number one, like many teams would like in the first round, but he could be an excellent slot receiver in the Steelers system. Also Hines Ward is in the final year of his contract and they just lost Nate Washington, who had a surprisingly large roll in the offense last season. Limas Sweed could be the man to step up but he has done nothing at all to suggest that he is ready for that totaling only six receptions for 64 yards in 11 games. Harvin is undersized and has been dependent upon moving around on the field but he has also been one of the most explosive and impactful players in the nation for the last two years. Scouting Report.
Honorable Mention to:

Larry English – OLB – Northern Illinois - A big question mark coming out of NIU. Scouting Report. Video: One

Robert Ayers- DE – Tennessee – A large defensive end that would probably be better suited to a 3-4 than a 4-3 unless the team was looking to use him as a run stopper. Scouting Report. Video: One

Eben Britton – T – Arizona - Britten in an amazing athlete, at 6′6 and 310 lbs he can run a 5.10 40. Scouting Report.
LeSean McCoy – RB – Pitt - McCoy is a good all around back that can probably handle everything except for the short yardage stuff. Video: One, Two

Michael Johnson – DE – Georgia Tech - Johnson has all of the skills to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL but his motor has been questioned as he could not break into the starting line up until his senior season. With an extra year to develop he could be a project worth taking on. Video: One, Two

Paul Kruger – OLB – Utah – A very good edge pass rusher but he must be in a 3-4 and there is always a chance for a step backwards when you change positions. Scouting Report. Video: One (Kind of)

Alright this is probably the final mock for this year. I have tried to make it so that it is more of what I think will happen rather than what should happen but some of that line may be blurred, especially with the Texans. This is all made under the assumption that there won’t be any trades, even though I could see three maybe even four trades in the first round. Especially with players like Andre Smith, Malcom Jenkins and Mark Sanchez possibly looming in the middle of the round (pray to god that the Texans can trade back).

1) Detroit Lions- Matt Stafford – QB – Georgia - The Lions are in need of a major overhaul in almost every facet of their organization, as indicated by them being the first team to play 16 games and lose every single one of them.

2) St. Louis Rams- Jason Smith – LT – Baylor - Since the Rams let go of Orlando Pace they have pretty well penciled in the fact that they will be getting a tackle at number two. Video: One

3) Kansas City Chiefs - Michael Crabtree – WR – Texas Tech - With the offensive line giving up 55 sacks last year this may not be the greatest need of the Chiefs but the team needs something that they can hang their hat on. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

4) Seattle Seahawks – Aaron Curry – There are plenty of options here for the Seahawks; they could go with Sanchez, Smith, Monroe, Raji or a number of others but the single most sure fire prospect in this draft seems to be Curry. Curry is an absolute animal with physical talent out the wazoo. He can step in and immediately help a team that ranked 30th in total defense. This will give them a solid core at linebacker consisting of Lofa Tatupa and Lerroy Hill. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

5) Cleveland Browns – Brian Orakpo – DE/ OLB - The Browns got a total of 5 sacks last year out of their starting OLBs. Video: One,

6) Cincinnati Bengals – Eugene Monroe – LT - Monroe is the most sure fire tackle in this draft, coming out of Al Groh’s system in Virginia. Video: One,

7) Oakland Raiders – Jeremy Maclin – WR – Missouri - It’s hard to decide which cliche to throw out here about Al Davis and speed so I’ll let you choose for yourself.

Raji – DT – Boston College - Raji was one of the hottest commodities coming out of the Senior Bowl.

9) Green Bay Packers – Aaron Maybin – DE – Penn State – The number one knock on Maybin is his lack of size. He comes in at 6′4 and 246 pounds which is undersized for his traditional defensive end position but would be ideal to play outside linebacker in the Packers new 3-4 scheme. The Packers have talent on their defense but they need to be able to pressure the passer from the edge and there is no certainty that Aaron Kampman will make a seamless switch and Brady Poppinga has a total of three sacks over his four year career. Scouting Report. Video: One

10) San Francisco 49ers – Malcolm Jenkins- CB – Ohio State – He was almost a lock for a top 5 spot until he ran a 4.55 sec 40 and for some reason scouts and GMs think that the way you run a straight line on a track without pads on is a great way to determine how you will be as a pro football player. Ri-fucking-diculous. Personally I still like Jenkins a lot. Just watch the video his play speaks for itself. Scouting Report. Video: One

11) Buffalo Bills – Everette Brown – DE – Florida State - Brown is coming off of an extremely productive season where he totaled 21.5 TFLs and 13.5 sacks. Scouting Report. Video: One

12) Denver Broncos – Vonta Davis – CB – Illinois - I don’t have Davis rated as the best defensive back but I think he may have more upside than Jenkins and I think he fits better into the system that Mike Nolan will be wanting to implement in Denver. The Broncos gave up an average of 228 yards per game in the air last year and something needs to be done about it so they take the best available corner. Nolan would love to have an edge pass rusher a la Terrel Suggs but with Maybin jumping off the board I think it would be a stretch here. They could be looking at Brian Cushing, Clay Mathews or Larry English to fill the void and none of them would shock me but the switch to the 3-4 should be beneficial for both Jarvis Moss and Elvis Dumervil. There would also be better value for that position at 18. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

13) Washington Redskins - Andre Smith – LT – Alabama - Smith is arguably the most talented and dominating offensive lineman in this draft.

14) New Orleans Saints – Brain Cushing – LB – USC - The Saints would probably love to trade back and pick up a few additional picks but if they are at 14 I think they take “cush” with their first pick. Cushing is a great athlete and has had some injury concerns but has not missed that many games. He is capable of playing either inside or outside for a 3-4 team but he can come in and start for the Saints at OLB. Defensive end would be a possibility but they have two massive contracts that may be prohibitive. Scouting Report. Video: One

15) Houston Texans – Clint Sintim – LB – UVA – This may seem very high for Sintim (I’ve seen him from this pick all the way back to the middle of the second round in other mocks but generally between 23-29) but he fits what the Texans need here. He can come in and start at strong side linebacker and most importantly he has led the nation in sacks for a linebacker over the last two years. This is exactly what the Texans need in order to help Mario Williams, and hopefully Antonio Smith, get to the passer. A movable linebacker that can get to the QB would help this defense immeasurably. With that being the pick a safety like Delmas or Moore would also be a pick here but they are both a reach as well. Really the Texans simply need to go best player available as long as it isn’t a QB or a WR. Scouting Report. Video: One

16) San Diego Chargers – Rey Maualuga – ILB – USC - The Chargers ranked 11th in rush defense last season despite the fact that their starting ILB, Tim Dobbins, only posted 58 tackles while starting all 16 games. Scouting Report.
17) New York Jets – Mark Sanchez – QB – USC - This is an interesting spot for the Jets; they clearly need a quarterback with the loss of Brett Favre but I am not particularly sold on the ability of Sanchez to come in and be in impact contributor in his first and maybe even his second year in the league. Video: One

18 ) Denver Broncos – Chris Wells – RB – Ohio State – A powerful runner with good but not great speed. The Broncos need more out of their running back position in order to take the pressure off of Kyle Orton. Buckhalter is a good back but he may not be able to carry the full load for the whole season. Scouting Report. Video: One

19) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Clay Mathews- LB – USC- With the loss of both of their OLBs they are in desperate need of help here and Clay Mathews has the potential to step in and be the next great OLB in Tampa. Having played the elephant position at USC Mathews will be able to help the Bucs improve on their 19th ranked defense. Scouting Report. Video: One,

20) Detroit Lions – James Laurenitus – ILB – Ohio State- Just look at the tape on this guy. He could have been a top 10 draft choice had he come out last year but opted to stay for his final year of college at Ohio State. Now the Lions select him with their 2nd selection in the first round and cement their line backing core. Video: One

21)Philadelphia Eagles – Michael Oher – LT – Ole Miss – Tra Thomas is gone, to Jacksonville, and Jon Runyan has yet to be resigned. Even if Runyan is resigned he is a right tackle and will sooner or later lose the war with father time. Oher slides a little bit because of the comparison between him and the other top tackles but Oher is a very good tackle and should be able to hold down the left side of the line in Philly, which they desperately need since they gave up 49 sacks last season. Scouting Report. Video: One

22) Minnesota Vikings – Alex Mack – C – Cal – Mack is rated by many as one of the top offensive linemen in the entire draft and by almost everyone as the number one center. Video: One

23) New England - Larry English – OLB – Northern Illinois - The Pats continue to get younger and more athletic in their line-backing corp. Pierre Woods is simply not a good starting OLB much less one on a good team that plans on being a real contender. English is fast and athletic and can definitely get to the QB. With that said there are some concerns as he has had several major injuries and his competition can’t be described as “elite”. There are also a few other options for the Pats including Knowshon Moreno. Scouting Report.
24) Atlanta Falcons- Alphonso Smith – CB – Wake Forest - Smith led the nation in interceptions at eight and set the all time ACC record for interceptions. The entire Falcon’s team had 10 interceptions last year and were ranked 21st in pass defense. Smith will be able to come to a young up and coming team and have an immediate impact. He can also help out on special teams. Scouting Report.
25) Miami Dolphins – Darius Heyward-Bey – WR – Maryland- The Dolphins have been lacking a true number one receiver for what seems like forever. I mean really the last good Dolphin wide out was who? Bey ran the fastest 40 time of any receiver and was noticeably faster than the other elite wide receivers. With that said there are some red flags that come up when you talk about Bey. He may be one of the bigger boom/bust prospects in this draft but the Dolphins may have enough leadership to guide him through. The only other question for next year is if Pennington has a strong enough arm to get the ball out in front of Bey (I bet Chad is so sick of hearing that). Scouting Report.Video: One

26) Baltimore Ravens- Max Unger – OL – Oregon – The Baltimore Ravens define themselves by their defense and their running game. Unger will be able to help them continue the tradition of having an elite running game. Video: One

27) Indianapolis Colts -Duke Robinson – G – Oklahoma – The Duke is one of the two best interior linemen in the entire draft and is a great pick here as the Colts work on improving their running game as well as protecting Peyton. Knowshon Moreno would be another interesting choice here especially if the Colts feel like they could get another guard in the second round. Scouting Report. Video: One

28 ) Philadelphia - Percy Harvin – WR - Florida – The Eagles have proven four times now that you don’t have to have a true number one receiver to make the NFC Championship, but it wouldn’t hurt would it? Harvin is not a prototypical number one. He is undersized and has been dependent upon moving around on the field but he has also been one of the most explosive and impactful players in the nation for the last two years. With Andy Reid’s pass happy west coast style of offense Harvin may be able to find similar success. Scouting Report.
29) New York Giants – William Moore – S – Missouri - Look the Giants have Super Bowl aspirations and C.C.
30) Tennessee Titans – Brandon Pettigrew – TE – Oklahoma State - Pettigrew is undoubtedly the top tight end coming out in this years draft and will be a safety valve for Kerry Collins (not Vince Young). Pettigrew is a very good blocker and can be put on whichever edge the elite pass rusher is coming from to help the Titans in their protection and has very solid hands despite not putting up massive numbers. Scouting Report. Video: One

31) Arizona Cardinals- Knowshon Moreno – RB – Georgia - I think Moreno is the best back in this draft once you consider health. With that said the Cardinals are elated to have him fall all the way to the bottom of the round where they promptly jump on him. This will alleviate any pressure that James could have applied and he may be either shown the door or traded for a late round pick. Moreno is the total package despite a pathetic 40 time (4.61). Scouting Report.
32) Pittsburg Steelers – Tyson Jackson – DE – LSU – One of the more over-hyped players in the nation the last year or two but has all of the tangible skills that you would want for a 3-4 defensive end. The Steelers are aging all along their defensive line and a youth movement along the line would be beneficial for future Steelers teams, being the type of organization that they are they never stop building for the future. Scouting Report. Video: One

Honorable Mention to:

D.J. Moore – CB – Vanderbilt – Could slip into the first round but probably goes in the top half of the second round. He had a disappointing combine etc Video: One

Perria Jerry – DT – Ole Miss - Jerry is a legit DT that can cause havoc in the backfield. Scouting Report. Video: One

I remember being a little kid and playing sports like a maniac. The competition, the youthful exuberance and passion for the game were all addictive and they still are to this day. But I never understood what a coach was thinking when they said they were happy as long as everyone had a good time and no body got hurt. I remember thinking that I didn’t mind getting hurt just so long as we won; so why would the coach care so much?

First, a little bit about me. I am 25 and a hardcore sports fan. Anything and everything sports is what I love. I am in the process of trying to get a job working in sports radio where you litterally need to know everything about everything. I am a big believer in the fundamentals of sports and playing the game the right way, perhaps because that’s what I remember being taught when I was a kid.

Well now I am the coach. My son, Aidan, is five and playing T-ball for the first time and I have become the head coach and I now completely understand what every other coach was thinking. We have had three practices followed by four games and the kids almost have the idea down that after they field the ball they need to throw it to first base. Normally this would drive me crazy and I would want to rant and rave about all of the things that are fundamentally incorrect about the approach to the game. We didn’t have time to teach the kids anything about the different positions, however this problem was preempted by the fact that there are 12 kids on the team and all of them play at the same time. Then all of the kids swing the bat like they are trying to slay some small animal rather than trying to hit a line drive through the gap in the other teams poorly positioned players, numerous as they may be.

But then it all stops mattering when Rebecca, the cutest little red head you have ever seen, stops paying attention to everything else in the game and yells “Coach Job my pony tail is coming loose!” I realize that as long as those 12 kids are happy and can look back on this year as a year where they learned to enjoy the sport that is more important than anything else, especially how to turn a 4-6-3 double play (the second baseman needs to make sure and get depth so that he doesn’t get in the way of the short stops throw back to first, just saying).

Fired Up is a movie about two high school studs that are looking for a new challenge. They have mastered high school, football and all the girls in their high school. Now they can move on and presumably up when they join the cheer leading team and head off to cheer camp. They are then presented with a plethora of new “challenges”.

Being a single red blooded 25 year old male the prospect of spending an hour and a half watching hundreds of beautiful girls in cheerleader uniforms should seem like a very good thing. Yet when the plot is as stale as three week old anchovies it is hard for anyone to digest. Since I hope that none of you will ever see this movie I’ll break it down for you. Boys like girls. Boys go to cheer camp to get girls. Girls get mad. Boys win girls over. It is the same old story that seems to be retold and retold despite the fact that it is neither believable nor interesting.

The entire movie was supposed to be a comedy directed at the new good ole’ boys (12-18) with a couple of winks and a punch to the shoulder but the only punch that anyone received was to wake them up after the movie was over. There are very few movies that I find myself wishing I could fast forward through to get to the end of it but this movie has made that elite class.

I have to admit there were about two maybe two and a half funny scenes in the movie but if I watch a dog chase its tale for an hour and a half straight he’ll probably do something funny too. I’m sorry but I’m really stuggling being objective because the movie was just atrocious.

1) Detroit Lions- Matt Stafford – QB – Georgia - The Lions are in need of a major overhaul in almost every facet of their organization, as indicated by them being the first team to play 16 games and lose every single one of them.

2) St. Louis Rams- Jason Smith – LT – Baylor - Since the Rams let go of Orlando Pace they have pretty well penciled in the fact that they will be getting a tackle at number two. Video: One

3) Kansas City Chiefs - Aaron Curry – The Chiefs have a plethora of needs and thus several directions that they could go in. This time they opt to take what the experts are projecting as the most sure fire talent in the draft. Curry will be able to come in and be an instant impact starter for the Chiefs playing on the strong side. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

4) Seattle Seahawks – Eugene Monroe – LT - The Seahawks are facing the possible demise of Walter Jones as an elite tackle and possibly the end of his career after surgery that cost him the last several weeks of the 2008 season. Sean Locklear has never shown himself to be much of anything besides an average right tackle, so if Jones miraculously comes back having Monroe and Jones as your bookends would be something for hawks fans to be happy about. They also can point to their demise when they lost All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson and Shawn Alexander, but there is no running back worth taking at #4. Scouting Report. Video: One,

5) Cleveland Browns – Brian Orakpo – DE/ OLB - The Browns got a total of 5 sacks last year out of their starting OLBs. In a 3-4 defense that is simply unacceptable, especially when you consider the fact that Shaun Rogers had 4.5 sacks as a nose tackle. Orakpo is a physical freak who will instantly upgrade the the pass rush for Eric Mangini who will demand a lot more from his defense this coming year. Mangini will get that if Orakpo is anywhere near as good in the pros as he was in college where he had 11 sacks in 11 games. Hmmm if we project that out… Scouting Report. Video: One,

6) Cincinnati Bengals – Michael Oher – LT – Ole Miss - The Bengals are coming very close to returning to true Bungal form. Their team is obviously dependant on Carson Palmer to have any type of success and if he has now become injury prone they must protect him at all cost. The off the field issues of Andre Smith throw up an even larger red flag for those residing in Paul Brown Stadium. Oher is a fantastic player who has a great story and hopefully will be able to become a leader along the offensive line for the next decade. Crabtree is a very tempting option here because of the loss of T.J. and the pending problems (I don’t know what but they are coming) with Ocho Cinco. But as it stands now there are a few questions about Crabtree (if he is really fast enough to be an elite receiver in the NFL) and they have other serious needs. Scouting Report. Video: One

7) Oakland Raiders – Michael Crabtree – WR – Texas Tech - When you have Chaz Schilens and Johnnie Lee Higgins starting for you, and yeah I had to look that up, that screams for a true number one receiver. While there are certainly questions around Crabtree (I personally am not 100 percent convinced that he has the break away speed to be a perennial pro-bowler) Al Davis needs someone to make Jamarcus Russel look good because he’s not doing it on his own. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

8 ) Jacksonville Jaguars - Rey Maualuga – ILB – USC - After the fall out with Mike Peterson the Jaguars defense took a massive step backwards. Maualuga was the leader on one of the best college defenses we have seen in recent history and is an absolute tackling machine. He can solidify the middle of their defense and make the Jags fans forget about Peterson. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

9) Green Bay Packers – Everette Brown – DE – Florida State - With Dom Capers as the new defensive coordinator the Packers will be forced to not make the same mistake the Texans made by avoiding pass rushers in the first round (Jason Babin doesn’t really count, I mean come on). Brown is coming off of an extremely productive season where he totaled 21.5 TFLs and 13.5 sacks. Personally I like him more as a 4-3 defensive end but many scouts are projecting him as a 3-4 edge pass rusher. Scouting Report. Video: One

10) San Francisco 49ers – B.J. Raji – DT – Boston College - Raji is one of the hottest commodities coming out of the Senior Bowl. He has the ability to both stop the rush and rush the passer and could be an anchor for a defense. The Niners go with the best player available and a hope that they can build a dominating defense, something the NFC West hasn’t seen in a while. They ranked 13th overall in terms of yards allowed in 2008 but with an elite big man anchoring the front they may be able to take the next step. They could also look to upgrade their pass rush with Aaron Maybin. Scouting Report. Video: One, Two

11) Buffalo Bills – Aaron Maybin – DE – Penn State – The number one knock on Maybin is his lack of size. He comes in at 6′4 and 246 pounds which is certainly undersized but the Bills seem to work well with that. Their starters are weighing in at 261 and 243 for Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel respectively. They ranked 28th last year in terms of sacks and need un upgrade in terms of pressure and Maybin may be just the answer finishing his redshirt sophomore season with 12 sacks, that would be exactly half of what the Bills as a team had last year. A lot of people have Brandon Pettigrew going here but I just don’t see him being such a dominant tight end that he would go #11. B.P. had a total of 9 touchdowns in his career including a big fat 0 in his senior year. That just doesn’t scream top 15 to me. Scouting Report. Video: One

12) Denver Broncos – Vonta Davis – CB – Illinois - I don’t have Davis rated as the best defensive back but I think he may have as much upside as Jenkins and I think he fits better into the system that Mike Nolan will be wanting to implement in Denver. Nolan would love to have an edge pass rusher a la Terrel Suggs but with Maybin jumping off the board I think it would be a stretch here. They could be looking at Brian Cushing, Clay Mathews or Larry English to fill the void and none of them would shock me. Also the Broncos may want to look at Jeremy Maclin to give Cutler a new weapon and hopefully have him buy back into the new team but that’s unlikely unless they have other plans for Brandon Marshall. I still think Knowshon Moreno would be a very good pick for them here but that seems less likely now that his stock has fallen due to a slow 40 time. Scouting Report. Video: One

13) Washington Redskins - Andre Smith – LT – Alabama - Smith is arguably the most talented and dominating offensive lineman in this draft. He may start out as a guard but will obviously be transition to tackle as the aging Jon Janson and Chris Samuels. Scouting Report. Video: One,

14) New Orleans Saints – Malcolm Jenkins- CB – Ohio State – The Saints have been trying to find help for their secondary for years without much luck. With Roman Harper, Josh Bullocks and Jason David commanding three of the four starting positions it seems more than necessary to do something to upgrade the secondary. The Saints are thanking the football gods that Jenkins fell to them. He was almost a lock for a top 5 spot until he ran a 4.55 sec 40 and for some reason scouts and GMs think that the way you run a straight line on a track without pads on is a great way to determine how you will be as a pro football player. Ri-fucking-diculous. They may also look at adding a running back but I think they should be set with Stecker and Bush even if Bush is injury prone. Scouting Report. Video: One

15) Houston Texans – Clay Mathews- LB – USC- Well it looks like William Moore’s stock has taken a hit much like most of the stock on wall street and is in virtual free fall. He may still be there in the 2nd round when the Texans are drafting and if he is I would love to pick him there. With that said there are a couple of players I specifically don’t want the Texans to pick. I want nothing to do with Perria Jerry, who is another up the field type of pass rusher from the DT position. That is not what we need at this point. Its not that Jerry is bad player, just a bad fit for the team. Tyson Jackson is another D-Lineman I want no part of for just the opposite reason. He is a DE that is best suited to stopping the run, once again not what we need from that position. Also for some reason people think that we need another wide receiver, which really is just asinine. So any conversation about Maclin or Harvin should be immediately dismissed. Now on to the players we should be interested in. There seems to be a fair amount of hype around Brian Cushing. Cushing is very talented and if he could stay health would be a solid pick but there are several issues regarding his health that could be a concern, including a hamstring injury that cost him all of spring practice that won’t show up in his games missed. D.J. Moore is another possibility but at 15 he would be a noticeable reach. The same would be true for Larry English. My first pick, if we stay at 15, which we really shouldn’t, would be Clay Mathews. Clint Sintim is an interesting prospect for the Texans but would also have more value later in the draft. On the other hand Knowshon Moreno would be a decent value here, despite his 4.61 40 time, because of what he has shown over the last two years on the field. Moreno, however, is not the type of short yardage back the Texans need and I don’t think the Texans want to address this position in the first round. With that said Moreno or Wells would give the Texans a dynamic duo in the backfield along with “Speed” Slaton that may be able to rival the best duos in the NFL. Clay Mathews played the “elephant” position at USC, which was a hybrid between the defensive end and the strong side linebacker. This is precisely what the Texans need out of their strong side backer because they need him first and foremost to stop the run and rush the passer. He is also the nephew of Oiler Hall of Fame left tackle Bruce Mathews, who was recently hired as the Texans assistant offensive line coach. Scouting Report. Video: One,

16) San Diego Chargers – Brain Cushing – LB – USC - The Chargers would probably like to trade back and pick up a few additional picks but if they are at 16 I think they stay in SoCal for the first round. Cushing is a great athlete and has had some injury concerns but has not missed that many games. He is capable of playing either inside or outside for a 3-4 team but I would project him as an ILB under the assumption that Merriman comes back healthy. If the Chargers don’t believe he is healthy they may opt for Larry English who’s stock is shooting up draft boards and would fit better into a pass rushing OLB position for the Chargers. Scouting Report. Video: One

He certainly has the skills but his sheer lack of experience is worrisome. If all you watched of him was the Rose Bowl you would think this guy was unstoppable (Hmmm Sir Vincent Young anybody?) but as a whole he certainly has some chinks in his armor. One of the major concerns is how good did he look simply because he was at USC. Matt Leinhart is not doing him any favors here. Nor is Reggie Bush. The two most hyped players coming out of USC have both fallen short of expectations; of course this is much more true for Matt “I’m a bench warmer” Leinhart. Another possibility, and in my opinion a better one, would be to sign Jeff Garcia to be the signal caller and draft Jeremy Maclin to replace Coles and add a dynamic and explosive force to the offense. Scouting Report. Video: One

18 ) Chicago Bears – Jeremy Maclin – WR – Missouri - The Bears have two major deficiencies: defensive end and wide receiver. They must address one of these in the first round. The Bears have zero of their top four defensive ends signed after next year, which may not be all that bad because they combined for a total of 15.5 sacks between the four of them. Either way this must be addressed at some point in time for the Bears during this draft. However, when it takes your top two receivers still on the roster to top 1,000 yards wide receiver is a pretty big issues too. The Bears go with the best player available between the two positions and take Maclin over English. Despite the fact that the Bears had almost no production from the wide receiver corp Kyle Orton put up almost 3,000 yards and an 18/12 TD to Interception ratio. Who knows maybe he will be alright if he has a little bit of talent on the outside. Scouting Report. Video: One

19) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Darius Heyward-Bey – WR – Maryland- With Chucky (Gruden) using up the last of his political capital from the Super Bowl he doesn’t have the time to draft a quarterback and groom him for the future so instead he looks for a player that will make an immediate impact and save his job. They could take a tackle here but instead I think they opt for the wide out with the most upside and hope that he develops into a star opposite Antonio Bryant. Bey ran the fastest 40 time of any receiver and was noticeably faster than the other elite wide receivers. Scouting Report.Video: One

20) Detroit Lions – Brandon Pettigrew – TE – Oklahoma State - Pettigrew is undoubtedly the top tight end coming out in this years draft and will be a safety valve for Matt Stafford as the Lions try to do something that won’t embarrass them anymore, good luck with that. Pettigrew is a very good blocker and can be put on whichever edge the elite pass rusher is coming from to help Stafford in his protection and has very solid hands despite not putting up massive numbers. Scouting Report. Video: One

21)Philadelphia Eagles – Eben Britton – T – Arizona – The Eagles may be reaching a little here but they have a good and relatively deep team that allows them to make this stretch. Britten in an amazing athlete, at 6′6 and 310 lbs he can run a 5.10 40. Contracts also are a major factor with both Tra Thomas’ and John Runyan’s expiring this year. Both have been in the league for over a decade and while their decline may not be showing yet no one can beat father time. Scouting Report. Video: One (This one is a bit of a stretch, just jump to the end)

22) Minnesota Vikings – Alex Mack – C – Cal – Mack is rated by many as one of the top offensive linemen in the entire draft and by almost everyone as the number one center.

There are also a few other options for the Pats including Knowshon Moreno/ Chris Wells or possibly James Laurenitus to eventually take Teddy Bruschi’s place. Scouting Report. Video: One

24) Atlanta Falcons- Clint Sintim – LB – UVA – Sintim is a down hill tackler that can help the Falcons shore up their 28th ranked run defense and now that Keith Brooking is gone they are in desperate need of help at the position. As of right now they would be starting Coy Wire who has 125 tackles in his last 79 games. Another possibility would be for them to take Perria Jerry who may be ranked higher by most scouts but for now I am going with the Falcons addressing their largest need. Scouting Report. Video: One

25) Miami Dolphins – Chris Wells – RB – Ohio State – The Dolphins developed and implemented the Wild Cat offense better than anyone else in the NFL. Now they have the ability to discharge Ricky Williams who was much better than expected but still not great. In addition to this Wells gives you an insurance policy if Ronnie Brown goes down. There are numerous other picks that the Phins might be looking at including Duke Robinson, Knowshon Moreno, Paul Kruger, D.J. Moore, Sean Smith, or Alphonso Smith. In other words there are so many directions this pick could go in I’m a little bit lost on this one so if you have any brilliant ideas or visions sent from above let me know. Scouting Report. Video: One

26) Baltimore Ravens- Alphonso Smith – CB – Wake Forest - As absolutely amazing as their defense was last year the corner backs left something to be desired at the end of the season. Granted that is due largely to injuries to Chris McCalister and Sammari Rolle but Rolle is aging and McCalister has been injured before and probably will not be back next year. Scouting Report.

Video: One, Two

29) New York Giants – William Moore – S – Missouri - Look the Giants have Super Bowl aspirations and C.C. Scouting Report. Video: One

30) Tennesse Titans – Perria Jerry – DT – Ole Miss - Jerry is a legit DT that can cause havoc in the backfield. He is absolutely not Albert Haynseworth but with that said I don’t think Albert will be Albert after signing a ridiculously fat (pun intended) $100M contract. Scouting Report.

32) Pittsburg Steelers -Max Unger – OL – Oregon – Unger is the most versatile lineman in the entire draft. He has played four positions on the line in his time at Oregon. Started out as a left tackle and then was moved inside to center. Would probably play guard for the Steelers but they had enough health issues along the line last year that the value of his versatility would not be lost on them. Scouting Report. Video: One

Honorable Mention to:

Tyson Jackson – DE – LSU – One of the more over-hyped players in the nation the last year or two but has all of the tangible skills that you would want for a 3-4 defensive end. Scouting Report. Video: One

James Laurenitus – ILB – Ohio State- Just look at the tape on this guy. Scouting Report. Video: One

Paul Kruger – OLB – Utah – A very good edge pass rusher but he must be in a 3-4 and there is always a chance for a step backwards when you change positions. Scouting Report. Video: One (Kind of)

D.J. Moore – CB – Vanderbilt – Could slip into the first round but probably goes in the top half of the second round. Video: One

Diversity. According to Webster’s Dictionary it means “the condition of being diverse : variety ; especially : the inclusion of diverse people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization <programs intended to promote diversity in schools>”. As the students filed in on Friday they were greeted with graffiti encouraging diversity.

While everyone should be encouraged to not only accept diversity but to whole heartedly embrace it, anonymously writing catch phrases like “embrace diversity” may be the least effective way to go about it. Not only does it not specifically bring about any of the changes that the group presumably would want but their methodology may in fact create a negative stereo type of the type of people that would encourage such things. Even with the best of intentions this can still come off as being more rebellious than revolutionary.

While general awareness is always necessary more specific steps should be taken in order to achieve the diversity and equality for which people are searching. The ACLU has several recommendations that perhaps should be used as a model. The first is that they are attempting to close some of the loop holes that were left open in 1963 when the Government created the Equal Pay Act. They are on their way with the success of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act but they are still striving for more by pettitioning their Senators.

Also the ACLU has a campaign called “Tell3” in which they encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender members to do more than just come out. The ACLU wants them to tell three people about their experience in coming out and create a more personal awareness in the community. These specific acts that the ACLU are ways that we can encourage diversity here at UH as well we just need some more leadership rather than anonymous stunts.

Children learn through many different ways. My son Aidan is (allow me to brag for just a second) a smart, sweet and charismatic five year old that attends the University of Houston Child Care Center. Last Friday, for black history month the home of the little cougars invited D.R.U.M., “a premier world rhythm, African rhythm and reggae band”, to come and perform for the children so that they could learn about black history in a more dynamic and exciting atmosphere.

DRUM, which stands for Divine Rhythm United Motion, was comprised of three members when they attended UH; Alafia, Nathan, and Osakwe. Alafia was the apparent leader and the most dynamic of the three in terms of being a performer. The children, including Aidan, loved him. After a couple of songs to get the kids interested they strayed away from the pure music to tell a story and make a point. Alafia, who has dreds running down to the middle of his back, stands up and begins telling the children about Africa and how far away it was. He related to them in terms that they could understand and then began a story.

The story was the story of a bully, all of the children could relate even at this young of an age, and how to handle yourself when a bully challenges you. The children in the story wanted to fight the bully at first, but calmer heads prevailed and instead they came up with another plan. Alafia, in the process of telling the story, stood up and came down from the stage. When the children in the story came up with their plan to teach the bully a lesson they, as well as Alafia, decided to keep it a secret. So Alafia went around and whispered in the ears of 15-20 children in the audience. ( In the process he accidentally knocked over one of the kids but made his appology by picking a flower and offered it as a sign of peace.) Then he returned to the front of group and told the everyone that the next time the bully tried to bully someone everyone circled around him and sang and then clapped in unison in order to scare the bully so badly that he would never try to bully anyone ever again. This quickly became the highlight of the afternoon for Aidan when Alafia began to lead them in a song and dance routine.
Aidan thoroughly enjoyed the entire performance but nothing stuck out to him as much as the dancing. However, after I asked him about the story he remembered the core points. That you don’t need to fight a bully with your fists and that the boys and girls stood up for each other. Then as we were talking he brought up the point that the story happened in Africa but the boys and girls there were just the same as him. Sometimes a creative new approach is the best way to bring home an age old message.

As the NFL begins to warm up for the off-season there are numerous concerns that the Houston Texans would like to address. They have never had a play making safety, they desperately need an edge pass rusher opposite Mario Williams, they need someone to play like a true nose tackle and clog the middle, they need to upgrade their strong side linebacker, they need another running back for short yardage and to spell Steve Slaton and as always it wouldn’t hurt to add some more talent to the offensive line. That is a lot to fix with essentially three or four meaningful draft picks and a GM that doesn’t spend big money in the free agency market.

Of course that is under the assumption that the Texans will resign Dunta Robinson. Robinson is a free agent this year coming off of a miraculous come back from a devastating knee injury. Robinson will be the second best corner on the market this off-season behind Nnamdi Asomugha, who is arguably the best corner in the game right now. However, the Texans need Robinson for more than just his excellence on the field. Dunta is the emotional leader of the defense and has the work ethic to teach the next generation of Texans what it takes to be successful. I got to see him rehabbing during the pre-season and he was ahead of schedule, running and trying harder than anyone else on the field. That is what any organization would pay top dollar for, the total package.

If you look at his stats they are solid all around but a couple of things jump out upon further inspection. Number one is that he is a tackling machine at cornerback. The three full season he played he posted over 80 tackles, and anyone who watched him play knows that he is no ankle biter, he lays the wood on anyone unfortunate enough to take him on. For a team that has historically had trouble with stopping the run this is a key asset. Also if you look at his interceptions and passes defensed you will notice that he had his best season his rookie year. That is because his rookie year people didn’t know about him yet and they kept on challenging him. Also 2004 was the only year he has had someone on the opposite side of the field that the other team had even a little bit of respect for, the honorable Aaron Glenn. So with this said the Texans have the opportunity here to make their franchise significantly better or significantly worse.

The on the field accolades speak for the themselves but the leadership and fire that Robinson brings are indispensable for the Texans to be who they want to be. In addition to this the Texans have a first time Defensive Coordinator who is bringing an attacking scheme. The most important thing you can give him is a lock down corner to make sure that the rest of the team has time to attack. Finally the Texans need to continue to define themselves as a class organization. This is a chance to tell every player in the league that if you play for us and play well we will not forget you.

Then there is that possibility that some how some way we don’t sign him. If that is the case one of the strengths of our team has just become a devastating weakness. We will then need to go out and add an elite free agent (which seems almost unthinkable) or draft one in the first round of the draft. This obviously means that we can’t add another explosive defender either at defensive end or at safety. In addition that means we will have Fred Bennett matching up with some of the best receivers in the league one on one while Frank Bush attempts to blitz. Needless to say this is not the formula for a playoff contender.

Look I love Larry Fitzgerald as much as just about any body. I have been all over this guy for a couple of years now. But please lets take a step back and look at this recent onslaught of Larry Love is getting a little bit rediculous. Let me take a step back again. Fitz is a legit top 5 receiver with no argument. If you want to put him at number one, fine. But look John Freaking Clayton wrote ” Larry Fitzgerald is the most unstoppable wide receiver since Jerry Rice.” Are you kidding me? Like seriously? Yes Fitz is great but during the season he wasn’t even the best receiver in the league. Andre Johnson did more with less than Fitz. Is Larry a legit all-pro? Yes. Do we need to go back to Jerry Rice to find someone to compare him to? No. How about Randy Moss last year? Wasn’t Moss the greatest since Rice last year? What about T.O. when he was in Philly? Wasn’t he the greatest specimen to ever grace the field? What about Marvin Harrison? What about all of the greats that have come before?

This whole thing about how he shreded the Steelers defense? If you check the play by play, rather than just the totals, you would see that Fitz had one reception for 12 yards with 10:33 left in the game. Granted, after that point he exploded but to say that he dominated the game is simply incorrect. I really have not checked if there is a more impressive 10 minute span in Super Bowl history but there may not be, but that is just it. It was 10 minutes. If he would have been a factor at all before that point the Cardinals would have won that game. Are we really that much of a knee jerk society that we immediately forget everything else that came more than a couple of minutes ago?

My point is not to hate on Fitz at all, I’m happy that he is being recognized as an elite receiver. However, I am sick of the John Claytons of the world spouting off at the mouth everytime something happens and sensationalizing it to extreme proportions simply because it reads better for those of us that don’t take the time to think anything through. It’s kind of funny, people always blame bloggers for not being rational or over reacting to things but where do you think they learned it? Psss… it may have been John Clayton. “For many, this calls into question why ESPN continues to give him air time on a daily basis, due to his obvious nerdy appearance”

That was Wiki people, not me, but you’ve got to love it.

Recently the MLB tax return for 2007 came out. The most interesting aspect of this was that Bud Selig, the commissioner hand picked by the owners, made almost $17.5 million. This is a 17% jump in commission over the 2006 tax return, this for a man that presided over the steroid era. While there is no denying that over the past several years the MLB has been raking in money like never before, making all of the owners fat and happy, it seems as though there should be some consideration of his total impact on the game rather than just his monetary impact.

Baseball, hopefully, is coming out of the darkest period of it’s proud and storied history. A period that saw rampant drug abuse by the players of every caliber. For the next decade when we discuss a players Hall of Fame candidacy we will invariably end the discussion with “Did he juice?” Without the ability, or perhaps the desire, to test all of the players in question the public will never truly know, leaving a dense cloud of doubt over a generation of ball players. How fantastic would it have been to watch Barry Bonds as a legitimate Hall of Famer if he hadn’t gone all “barr-roid” on us? What about Clemons? Can I look my son in the eye and tell him that he sat in my lap and watched the greatest pitcher anyone of my generation has ever seen? Probably not, and that’s the sad part. We will be forced to question what we see rather than simply enjoy the product on its face value. But apparently the reward for that is a $3 million dollar raise. But don’t worry, in a sport that knocks out huge contracts much like Bonds in his ‘prime’, the commish is making less than three players. Of course one of those is the largest contract in major league history and the other two are Yankees getting fat off of Steinbrener’s dreams of grandeur. We should all learn from what is going on with the economy. Greed kills, but at least some of the executives have been held accountable. Unfortunately some have gotten raises as well, clearly the MLB chose the wrong path.
